Cast of The Sound of Music Announced

Dear All,

Congratulations to you for successfully auditioning for the Sound of Music at La Sierra University. Thank you for your patience in waiting for the cast announcement. Lots of people have auditioned, and of course, we have limited places for casting, and we are looking for particular characters and in particular combinations. Please do not conclude that your part is bigger or smaller than the other. All of you are equally important parts of the show.

I would like to hold a cast meeting on Friday, November 4th at 2 pm. This meeting will be held in the Hole Memorial Auditorium at La Sierra University, and if you are under the age of 18, we ask that a parent or guardian accompany you. We will be doing some preliminary paperwork, and go over schedules and get some measurements.

There will be an initial meeting for LSU students only on Friday, October 28th at 12:30 pm in the auditorium.

If you have any questions or concerns about our meetings, please let me know ASAP.

Sincerely,

Raejin Lee

La Sierra University Department of Music is fortunate to have two very talented people grace Hole Memorial Auditorium. On Monday evening, Oct. 24, 2011, Ms. Tanya Gabrielian, pianist, will perform in Hole Memorial Auditorium. Proceeding the recital, Mr. Justin Tecson, painter, will have six pieces on display in the lobby of Hole Memorial Auditorium.

Tanya Gabrielian
Hailed by the London Times as “a pianist of powerful physical and imaginative muscle,” Tanya Gabrielian combines emotional vulnerability with thoughtful artistry, captivating audiences worldwide with her gripping, commanding performances.

Tanya Gabrielian has performed across North America, Europe, and Asia, in venues including Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully Hall in New York, Queen Elizabeth Hall and Wigmore Hall in London, Salle Cortot in Paris, Usher Hall in Edinburgh, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, Bonn Beethovenhaus, and the Dame Myra Hess Concert Series in Chicago. She has performed concerti with orchestras including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the New London Sinfonia, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra. Radio broadcasts include NPR, WGBH (Boston), WFMT (Chicago), KCSN (Los Angeles), WQXR (New York), and VPR (Vermont). Her debut CD, Kaleidoscope, was released in November 2010.

As founder of the “Art for Activism” initiative, Tanya Gabrielian is dedicated to promoting the artist as an activist through art. Projects have included an installation with the artist Fran Bull for the exhibit In Flanders Field: A Meditation on War, and an ongoing recital series featuring composers with mental illnesses, to highlight the stigma around mental health issues. Ms. Gabrielian was awarded the 2011 McGraw-Hill Robert Sherman Award for Music Education and Community Outreach for her work.

Tanya Gabrielian rose to international acclaim with first prizes in the Scottish International Piano Competition, Aram Khachaturyan International Piano Competition, and the Pro Musicis International Award. Her Wigmore Hall debut, as winner of the coveted Wigmore Prize awarded by the Royal Academy of Music, was reviewed as “revelatory, a feast of romantic pianism which held us enthralled” and “an astounding achievement by any standards, and one I cannot imagine being bettered… Remember the name—Tanya Gabrielian—you will be hearing a lot more from her I feel sure.”  Ms. Gabrielian’s Southbank debut recital in the Purcell Room in London, presented by the Philharmonia Orchestra, was chosen as “Performance of the Year 2006” by Seen and Heard International. She has also been featured on the cover of the magazine Clavier.

Born in the United States in 1983, Ms. Gabrielian began studying piano at the age of three. In 2000, she moved to London, where she received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the Royal Academy of Music, studying with Hamish Milne and Alexander Satz. Upon graduation, she was awarded with a DipRAM, the highest performing award of the Royal Academy of Music, and she received the prize for the best final recital for six consecutive years. In 2009, Gabrielian moved to New York as the only candidate accepted for The Juilliard School’s prestigious Artist Diploma program, an extraordinarily selective post-graduate residency program, where she completed her studies with Robert McDonald and Matti Raekallio.

LSU Music Major, Xander Knecht, Participates at the Montecito Music Festival

The Montecito Summer Music Festival is for highly gifted string, piano, and clarinet students ages 13 and up interested in spending an invigorating three weeks studying to improve technical abilities and honing their craft and musicianship skills.  Each student will receive two private lessons and two chamber music coachings per week.  Selected students will also play in master classes and in chamber ensembles with our esteemed faculty.

One of our music majors, Xander Knecht, is participating in this year's festival. He is a snippet of what he is experiencing so far:

Wednesday, July 20

I thought I'd give a little update today, the third day. The festival is going strong already; I've been keeping busy. I had a lesson, audition for masterclasses, first quartet rehearsal and stretching and breathing class yesterday. Most of the kids are actually from high school, but there are a few college students and at least one from Julliard. University of Michigan and Rice are also represented. There are bunch of kids from the Interlochen high school program who all came together. There are a few people who've been to Aspen around the same time as me, three years ago. I haven't heard everyone yet, but I think there are a lot of really serious players here. There are some very high-profile faculty and guests here, including Cho-Liang Lin, who will give a masterclass and play in a recital, and Tim Pitts, bass teacher from Rice, not to mention our own cello teacher Pin-Fei Tang and her husband and LA Phil member Suli Xue on violin!
Yuan Yuan is also here, playing in the Brahms B-flat maj. string sextet. We're both studying with Linda Wang, a former classmate of our teacher Jason Uyeyama. My first lesson with her was quite intense but instructive, and I'm trying to get ready for the next one on Friday. The last day is August 5. Hopefully I'll be in better shape for the fall, especially with chamber music. I'm in a quartet playing Beethoven op. 95. Our first coaching is tomorrow.

I've been practicing a fair amount, spread throughout the day. I've played some ping pong in the lobby, and I played soccer last night with a bunch of students. The food is actually pretty good. Montecito is a very pretty town; I ran downtown today to pick up some supplies.

Road Work on LSU Campus

La Sierra Community,

Beginning this Wednesday July 13 at 6am until Friday July 15 at 6am, we will be performing roadwork on:

1)       The road leading from the Library to the bottom of the hill and behind La Sierra Hall.  The Library parking lot will not be affected.  The lot behind La Sierra Hall will need to be empty.  The lots behind South Hall and Calkins will not be worked on, but all vehicles will be "trapped" if not removed.

2)       The road on Upper Campus Drive Stop sign (nearest Physical Plant) to Raley.  Middle Campus Drive will remain open.

Please pay attention to road personnel, traffic barriers, and heavy duty equipment which will be in the area.

This is the first of a few road work projects on campus and we will do our best to minimize the inconveniences each time.  Although there is no perfect time for road work, we do feel that the summer months are the most appropriate.  But, let me apologize in advance for your troubles and I can assure everyone it will not resemble the 405 Carmageddon of this weekend.
